Non è facile scegliere un brano con cui celebrare il 70° compleanno di uno degli epigoni del folk inglese, Martin Carthy. Oggi scelgo questo "Cold Haily Windy Night", in due versioni, che mi sembra sintetizzino bene tanti magnifici anni di carriera.
Nel primo video c'è la mia versione preferita di questa canzone, quella registrata nel 1971 con gli Steeleye Span per "Please to see the king". E' la prima delle incisioni di Martin con gli Span, e ne deriva uno degli album più belli della storia del folk-rock.
Nel secondo, Martin è in prima fila insieme a sua figlia Eliza in una riproposta dal vivo del brano proposto dal progetto Imagined Village.
E' evidente che la voglia di reinventare le proprie origini musicali, e di rimescolare stili, strumenti, ritmi per creare qualcosa di nuovo e unico non ha età e appartiene a quei rari personaggi che sono maestri e, ancora a settant'anni, hanno (per fortuna) ancora tanto da insegnare.

It is not easy to choose a song for celebrating the 70th birthday of one of the English folk myths, Martin Carthy. Anyway, I will choose this "Cold Haily Windy Night" in two versions, which I think could represent a good synthesis of so many wonderful years of career.
In the first video my favorite version of this song, recorded in 1971 with Steeleye Span on "Please to see the king". It was the first recording of Martin with Span, and the result is one of the most beautiful album in the history of folk-rock.
In the second, Martin is in the front row with her daughter Eliza in live performance touring with The Imagined Village project band.
The desire to reinventing its musical origins, to shuffling different styles, instruments and rhythms for creating something new and unique belongs to those rare characters who are masters, and even at seventy, have (thankfully) still so much to teach.
